In 1937 Mussolini began the construction of a super-bunker in the Mountain Soratte, 50 km from Rome, the place where Pope Silvester used to hide from persecutions in the IV century. Believed to be a new weaponry industry (officine protette del Duce), was in fact made for the highest burocrats of Italy.
Completed in 1941 and consisting in 4.2 km of galleries dug in the mountain, the bunker was finally occupied by the Supreme Command of the Wermacht, after Marshall Kesselring had escaped the bombing of his HQ in Frascati.
Our Tour takes you into the heart of the German Operative Center where the defense of the Gustav Line was being organised from Settembre ‘43 to may ‘44. In the entrance hall, between items from daily life of soldiers, rusty weaponry, and missiles, we’ll be introduced by one of the volunteers of Bunker Soratte Association, who were recently (2002) handed over the recovery of the bunker from the Ministry of Defense. After relaxing a few minutes on wooden ammunition boxes, we’ll switch on our torches and move on to explore approximately 1.5 km of galleries (33% of the total): debris is filling most of them, as the bunker underwent a peculiar type of bombing experimented here for the first time in WW2 (May 18th 1944).
The bunker was eventually abandoned up to 1967, when a team of 1,000 men began working on the refurbishment of the galleries, without knowing they were creating an atomic bunker in expectation of a Nuclear War. Slowly we’ll leave behind us WW2 and enter the Cold War age, with new galleries, dormitories, screens (part of the furniture is replacement) and cutting edge tecniques to protect the rooms from nuclear bombs waves.
