On the Gustav Line: Cassino

Tour Details

Experience the drama of a trip back in time, to visualise and understand the events that took place during the siege and defeat of the enemy at ”the Gustav” line.

We travel back years to the days when the Allies approached the line of defence situated in the Aurunci and Abruzzi mountains, 75 miles south of  Rome.  We find ourselves  in the marshland of the Liri River valley, where rivers criss-cross the rugged landscape, and where trenches, landmines, bunkers, rocks and trees were once covered in snow in the cold days of  February 1944.  The advance of the Allies made it even harder to conclude “Operation Diadem” in May..

From its high mountain viewpoint, the Abbey of Monte Cassino is where the Benedictine Monks have looked down on the journeys of pilgrims and ships from far and wide sailing the Tyrrhenian Sea for centuries. This was the scene of one of  the most devastating battles of WW2, in fact 4 battles took place, ending with the destruction of this religious site. The monastery is where more than 107,000 people from 32 nations found their final resting place.

We combine our visit of abandoned sites of the Gustav Line with a tour of  the almost totally destroyed city of St Pietro Infine, where the famous Hollywood movie director, Jules Buck,  filmed the documentary movie “The battle of St Pietro Infine”.

We will visit  the Museum “Parco della memoria storica” close to the ruins of St Pietro Infine, built in the spirit of commemoration and world peace by the Italian Carlo Rambaldi, the creator of Steven Spielberg´s “ E.T.” The Tour will end with a visit to the Commonwealth War Museum or the Polish War Museum which hosts the tomb of the famous general Wladyslaw Anders.
