The Battle For Anzio

Tour Details

Our memory of WWII takes us on a moving and emotional trip outside Rome, covering OPERATION SHINGLE, planned by Winston Churchill in order to bypass the Gustav Line and divert German troops from Cassino.

Leaving Rome towards the Pontina Way, we drive through EUR district, built before the start of WWII and the villages which formed the German defence line, set up in 7 days after the Allies’ landing by Field Marshall Kesselring: Carroceto, Campoleone, Aprilia (THE FACTORY) and the Flyover Bridge above via Nettunense: these were the sites where hundreds of British and American soldiers lost their lifes trying to advance the beachhead front.

FOR AMERICAN VISITORS: we then enter Anzio and stop at ‘Rangers’ Beach’ to cronicle the progress of the entire landing operation, also involving ‘Peter Beach’ and ‘X-Ray Beach’.

FOR VISITORS FROM THE COMMONWEALTH: we enter Anzio and stop at ‘Peter Beach’ (Beach of Lilies).

From the neoclassic casino (hq of Colonel Darby’s Rangers) or from the port of Anzio we move on to the nearby BEACHHEAD MUSEUM, constructed to house tools of warfare, biography and photographs. The collection was donated by Allied soldiers’ families to commemorate the ones who took part in the landing. The story of OPERATION SHINGLE is told in detail, giving an insight into weaponry, tactics, and figures.

Our Tour ends with a visit to one of the official War Cemeteries: you can choose among the AMERICAN SICILY-ROME WWII CEMETERY & MEMORIAL in Nettuno or the BEACH HEAD WAR CEMETERY in Anzio (for soldiers of the Commonwealth and volunteers from EIRE), or the GERMAN MILITARY CEMETERY in Pomezia.

OPTIONAL ADDITIONS (to be booked in advance): Caves of Aprilia, Forest of the Foxholes.
